Beetle--Butterfly--Bumblebee
Northern Corn Rootworm Beetle eating pollen from thistle. Notice that the Painted Lady Butterfly collects nectar instead. The butterfly warns off the bumblebee from landing on the same bloom. |
| Some parasites and predators find caterpillars from the smell of their frass. This inchworm's defense is to drop the "droppings" off the plant. Notice the size and coloration of the caterpillar closely matches the green leaves under the thistle bloom. A "regular" caterpillar probably could not navigate this bloom. This inchworm belongs to the family Eupithecia and is probably the Common Pug (miserulata). |
